The favored War Helmet of the
1300 and early 1400s! During this time of transition from chain mail to plate armor,
the bascinet style helm has held its place in history. Inventory of the Duke of
Gloucesters effects drawn up in 1397 lists two bascinets for war and
jousts and three helms (like the frogmouth) for jousts of peace,
implying an actual favor of this rounded style bascinet for glancing off blows during

men, hence the name century. These Centurion Generals wore adorned plumed

European Pigface Bascinet
circa 1390
This helm style became popular in the late 13th century widely replacing the Great Helm
because of its close fit styling. Towards the late 14th century the long snouted
appearance had earned it the English nickname Hounskull, or Pig-faced
bascinet. This exceptional full size helm is skillfully hand-crafted of 18 gauge
