European Bascinet
The favored “War Helmet” of the 1300 and early 1400’s! During this time of transition from chain mail to plate armor, the bascinet style helm has held its place in history. Inventory of the “Duke of Gloucester’s” effects drawn up in 1397 lists two bascinets for “war and jousts” and three helms (like the frogmouth) for jousts of “peace”, implying an actual favor of this rounded style bascinet for glancing off blows during combat. The European Pigface Bascinet
circa 1390
This helm style became popular in the late 13th century widely replacing the Great Helm because of its close fit styling. Towards the late 14th century the long snouted appearance had earned it the English nickname Hounskull, or “Pig-faced bascinet”.
